The public base exceeds twelve million names
Public Interest Registry’s live anti-abuse page reported 12,116,129 .ORG domains under management when DomainSense captured this snapshot on 26 August 2026. PIR’s 2024 annual report had described the earlier milestone of eleven million.
A domains-under-management figure is inventory, not a count of active charities, unique registrants, or websites. One organization can hold many names; one name can serve many people; some names do not resolve at all.

Abuse counts need a denominator
PIR’s live report displayed domains reported, suspensions, categories, and a reported percentage of domains under management. The percentage is often more comparable than a raw incident count, but it still depends on definitions, detection, reporting, and time window.
The page also notes that compromised domains may have been registered for legitimate purposes before an attacker abused them. Registration intent and observed abuse are separate questions.

Renewal measures accumulated usefulness
Renewal can be a stronger signal of sustained utility than gross registrations because a holder makes another decision to keep the name. Even so, blended renewal rates combine different cohorts, prices, channels, and use cases.
A domain market should be read through stock, creates, deletes, transfers, renewal, DNS activity, and abuse together. No single series explains the health of the namespace.

Registry stewardship reaches beyond uptime
PIR connects registry proceeds to support for the Internet Society and publishes community-impact and anti-abuse reporting. Those claims are part of the institutional record and should be evaluated with the same discipline as technical statistics: dates, definitions, source ownership, and independent context all matter.
The cultural value of .ORG is real precisely because it is not automatic. It is renewed through the conduct of registrants, registrars, the registry, and the institutions people encounter behind the names.
